Last reviewed Aug 19, 2026. Curated key dates are drawn from official IRS and state tax-agency sources. This is not a comprehensive filing calendar. Confirm every deadline before relying on it because due dates can change for disaster relief, holidays, elections, fiscal years, filing frequency, entity type, or other taxpayer-specific circumstances.

03 / Record retention

When in doubt, pause before discarding.

Federal and state retention rules vary by document, transaction and circumstance. Many federal tax records are commonly kept for at least three years, while property, basis, payroll, entity and fraud-related records can require longer periods.

  • Keep filed returns and proof of payment
  • Retain basis records while you own the asset
  • Keep payroll and entity records on their applicable schedules
  • Use encrypted storage and a secure backup
  • Shred expired records containing personal information
